Becoming an Artist: Early Childhood Experiences.

Fairbrother was around ten years old when her parents began integrating creative activities into her daily life outside of school, nurturing her artistic interests through various projects she completed both independently and with family. She spent time decorating Easter eggs, making holiday crafts, and exploring new materials, gradually building a sense of confidence and excitement around creativity. Around this time, she also began painting and drawing, especially after receiving her own table, dedicated to creative experimentation (left photograph).

In this photograph, Fairbrother is working on a small floral-patterned pillow, practicing with her first beginner’s sewing machine, which was a children’s model gifted to her by her Auntie Gigi. Her mother set it up on the dining room table, guiding her through the basics and passing down her own knowledge of sewing as Fairbrother’s curiosity for making continued to grow. What began as an interest in creating pillows that matched her bedding expanded into constant experimentation, she later crafted plushies, headbands, and small stitched objects while simultaneously learning to sew by hand when she became old enough to handle a stray needle.
