Music
Writing
Imagery
Music has always played a significant role in shaping Fairbrother’s overall influence and her artistic practice. Certain artists and songs have encouraged her to translate feeling into language, guiding the way she approaches her writing and text that sometimes appears within her work.
A lot of her favorite songs and artists come from the music that she grew up listening to around her family. One of her favorite artists for the last seven years is Nothing,Nowhere, specifically for the vulnerability and poetic clarity within in his lyrics. The atmospheric qualities and shifting moods found across the genres she listens to, informs the tone of her work, therefore music becomes another form of research within her practice.
Books and writing are equally important sources of inspiration for Fairbrother, shaping the reflective and poetic ideas that underpin her practice. She gravitates toward educational texts that are written more poetically, offering knowledge and emotional insight. Sherry Turkle’s Evocative Objects: Things We Think With has become particularly meaningful to her current work, articulating the intimate ways objects hold memory. Fairbrother also keeps a growing collection of quotes from artists she admires, gathering insight that aligns with her values or illuminates aspects of the creative process she finds grounding.
Imagery and photography also play a significant role in Fairbrother’s creative process, serving as both a visual archive and a continuous source of inspiration. She enjoys taking photos and collecting images that resonate with her based on colorpalette, forms, and textures. These images often become reference points within her practice, especially when she is working from memory and seeking to reconstruct a place, feeling, or object. Photography, for her, becomes another way of tracing experience and visually holding onto the things that inspire her not only as an artist but also as a person.
